A big and little hand for clock

NEWPORT Pagnell’s new town clock was officially unveiled on Saturday.
Newport businessman Roy Mason was on hand to unveil the new timepiece but graciously stepped aside to allow youngsters Madeline Day and Oliver Page to do the honours instead.
The Fenny Stompers Jazz Band was on hand to entertain crowds who had gathered to celebrate the new clock which has been built to commemorate the bicentenary of the town’s Iron Bridge.
The impressive timepiece has been erected in the High Street next to The Dolphin.
The project was made possible thanks to the hard work of councillors, Town Clock Committee members and volunteers who all contributed and helped with fundraising.
The project was granted planning permission in December 2010 after a long process which saw numerous designs entered. The committee then put the wheels in motion with elements of the structure commissioned and finely tuned before it was finally delivered to the town.
Thanks in particular go to Barry Clayton and David Agnew who worked tirelessly on the project, even waiving their normal fees.
They decided it was a project ‘by the community, for the community.’
Barry and David set a fundraising target of £25,000 for the work which included site excavation, concrete foundations, and all the work for the clock itself.
Mike Dean, of Newport Pagnell Construction, offered to donate his company’s services free-of-charge as did Martin Broughton, of Broughton Beatty.
Work started in November 2011 with the clock erected at the start of the year.
