Firefighters to take on London to Brighton challenge

editorial image

Eight firefighters from all over Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes are to take part in the London to Brighton Challenge on May 12 and 13 in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity.

The event is a 100-kilometre journey from Richmond Park, London, to Brighton pier, which can be completed by a combination of walking, running and jogging.

The challenge must be completed within 30 hours and the members taking part will be wearing full firefighting and breathing apparatus kit.

All eight are on-call firefighters, also known as Retained Duty System or RDS firefighters. They do the same job as full-time firefighters but are not based in a fire station. Instead, they are on standby, waiting to be called out by pager from home or work.

Taking part are Scott Goodman from Buckingham Fire Station, Dave Brennan from Marlow Fire Station, Marcus Rayner and Joe Dermanovic from High Wycombe Fire Station, Jon Bonich and Jack Revitt from Olney Fire Station, Rico Zad from Broughton Fire Station and Colin Partridge from Waddesdon Fire Station.

Scott, who also works in Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service’s control room in Aylesbury, said: “We are all currently training very hard, going for long walks on treadmills or out in the countryside. We are using large rucksacks filled with weights to replicate our breathing apparatus sets.”

The Fire Fighters Charity is a national charity which provides assistance to serving and retired fire and rescue service staff, their families and dependants.

The team has set a £4,000 sponsorship target. If you wish to donate, please visit the team’s JustGiving page
