Jubilee awards set to light the night

THE great and good of Milton Keynes are gearing up for a special awards night hosted by the Open University, all in the name of equality.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Equality Awards will be held on December 6 with the city’s unsung heroes set to be honoured in a number of categories for charity and individual work.

More than 50 nominations have been received and the awards committee will be meeting to finalise the shortlist and a list of worthy winners.

The nominations reflect all walks of city life. The charity sector includes a nomination for the One World Club for staging hugely successful and multi-cultural live shows with performers from a number of different cultures.

Also nominated is The Healthy Lifestyles project, which has been running for four years and engages with isolated women, encouraging them to use the weekly sessions to make friends, exercise and learn new skills.

In the Individual Awards category Samantha Watson of Thames Valley Police was nominated for helping to improve access to people in isolated communities.

PC Kevin Huson-Cook was nominated by the Milton Keynes Somali Community Association for his work around the city.

Navrita Atwal, chief executive of Milton Keynes Equality Council, is hoping that as many people as possible will support the night and tickets are still available for the event.

The awards night has been sponsored by a host of city businesses including the MK Citizen, Thames Valley Police, MK College, The Open University and South Central Ambulance Service.

> For more information on the event or to buy your tickets, priced at just £10, visit the MK Equality Council website at www.mkequalitycouncil.org.uk.
