MK is most desirable for commuters
A new survey shows Milton Keynes to be one of the UK’s most desirable locations for commuting to London as property buyers enjoy house prices which are 25 per cent lower than the average in competing commuter destinations as well as speedy journey times to the capital.
With an average house price of £150,069 and trains whisking passengers to London Euston in just 35 minutes, homeowners in Milton Keynes save a packet compared to those living in neighbouring counties such as Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Central Bedfordshire according to the research by property agents Carter Jonas.
Despite a 6.47 per cent fare rise which has seen Milton Keynes hit with one of the largest increases in the cost of an annual season ticket to London - up £268 to £4,408 - Carter Jonas said it expected the area to remain popular with house buyers looking to access the capital, as Milton Keynes is shown to be the second cheapest location after Northamptonshire when house and transport costs were calculated in 13 competing commuter destinations.
Carter Jonas, which is heading up the launch of a large new housing development that will bring 380 much-needed homes to the outskirts of Milton Keynes, said the city was even more attractive to house buyers because of the lure of its own entertainment attractions such as mk:one and Xscape. However the agent added that properties in close proximity to transport links to London would help to attract premium prices.
Carter Jonas is currently representing a new development at Stratford Park, on the former Radcliffe School site in Stratford Road which is just over one mile away from Wolverton Rail Station.
Zoe Davies, new homes manager at Carter Jonas, said: “Everyone is frustrated when the cost of train fares rise year on year but we wanted to commission this research to show Milton Keynes is still one of the UK’s best value spots for house buyers looking to commute to London.
“House buyers in Milton Keynes get a lot more for their money. But on top of that we feel that with its unique range of attractions such as the UK’s largest indoor ski slope, one of Europe’s longest shopping malls and an increasingly successful and well-known football team Milton Keynes has the amenities that will attract commuters who see the city as an exciting and vibrant place to live and not just as a base for accessing London.”
Stratford Park, a unique development by three of the UK’s largest house builders, Barratt Homes, Bellway and David Wilson Homes will see hundreds of contemporary one, two, three, four and five bedroom homes built on the 18 acre site.
With prices currently ranging from £160,000 to £274,995 for three and four bedroom homes agent Carter Jonas believes Stratford Park will be popular with professionals and families looking to enjoy the first class shopping and leisure amenities on their doorstep and capitalise on the area’s exceptional transport connections.
