Tris to take on half marathon fridge challenge

Some people might be concerned about how much it will cost to run a fridge freezer, but one city man is more interested in how much cash he can raise by running with his appliance.

Tristan Harding, known as Tris, who lives in Oakridge Park, will run Sunday’s MK half-marathon carrying a fridge freezer in a bid to get more sponsorship.

The 22-year-old NHS health advisor is running to raise money for The Rifles Regimental Trust’s Care for Casualties Appeal, the charity for the Rifles army regiment.

Tris has been part of E Company 7 Rifles, John Howard Barracks, in Blakelands since 2010 and his Territorial Army training has inspired his fundraising goal.

He said: “Last year the captain of my company did numerous challenges for the same charity as a challenge for his 50th year celebration – this year it is my turn to take the fridge out.”

Describing the Care for Casualties charity, Tris added: ““The appeal gives the severely wounded, their families and the families of fallen Riflemen the support, the inspiration and the means to rebuild their lives and make the best of their futures.

“They offer help, such as holidays, advice, jobs and training which can inspire self-sufficiency and hope.

“The charity does really good work for the guys who come back injured, and their families, and it is an appropriate charity as we lost one of our own – Andrew Fentiman – a few years ago.”

Preparations for the challenge have involved lots of training – taking into consideration not just the running distance but also the weight of the fridge.

Tris said: “I have been out running a lot with weight, either a weight vest or a backpack full of heavy stuff – anything to make the weight up.”

The St Paul’s Catholic School educated fundraiser added: “The fridge was my captain’s idea as he used it last year, so I decided to carry on his footsteps and hopefully try to make a career as a white goods delivery man.”
