Woodland Trust receives 105 trees
Community
The free Woodland Trust tree pack of 105 trees was received by Stony Stratford Town Council on January 31.
One of the trees is marked as a sapling grown from a seed collected from one of the royal household estates. The trees will be included in the hedge at the Mortimer Park Community Orchard to cover holes and gaps in the existing hedging, and some will be planted to create a windbreak for the community orchard. MKC have agreed not to cut the hedge in the inside of Mortimer Park so that the hedge can fruit. MKC will also loosen the earth by the hedge to assist planting of the new trees.
These free trees are among 6 million to be planted with the help of the Woodland Trust during Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee year. Next month marks the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne. The Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods project will involve millions of people across the UK coming together and planting 6 million trees.
Stony Stratford Town Council, MKC and Stony in Bloom have worked together to arrange this event on Saturday 25th February 2012. Joan Walker, Chairman of the Town Councils’ Projects Committee, said “The Town Council is really pleased to see the planting of new trees at Mortimer Park which will provide fruiting hedgerows which can be harvested in the future. It is essential we attract volunteers to come and help plant the trees.”
Judy Deveson, Town Councillor and Chair of Stony Stratford in Bloom said “Hedgerows are undervalued resources that are in danger of being lost from our countryside if we don’t start to appreciate their usefulness. In the past hedges were used as larders of healthy seasonal food – apples, berries and nuts were collected as a tasty supplement to the diet.”
The Bard of Stony Stratford will be joining the Group to declaim a poem in honour of the occasion
Everyone is welcome to come along and help this Saturday morning. There will be a small Woodland Trust ‘thank you’ gift for those that participate.
