A city resident recently returned from a week-long trip of a lifetime to the Cayman Islands in the British West Indies after winning a writing competition in Fabulous Food magazine.

Michael Hallett from Bow Brickhill visited Grand Cayman and its sister islands Little Cayman and Cayman Brac as part of a UK media group hosted by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism.

During his visit Michael attended the Cayman Cookout, the Cayman Islands’ premiere food and wine festival which takes place every January, featuring various celebrity chefs including New York’s Eric Ripert José Andrés, and the UK’s April Bloomfield and Anthony Bourdain.

Other attractions included swimming with stingrays in the wild, visiting the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, run by British scientist Fred Burton MBE who brought the world’s rarest iguana back from functional extinction, snorkelling the wreck of the USS Kittiwake which was sunk last year to create an artificial coral reef, seeing one of the world’s most priceless collection of motor cars, and finally a helicopter flight with former Hollywood stunt pilot Jerome Begot who was in the film ‘Speed’ with Keanu Reeves.

The highlight was a visit to Little Cayman, a coral cay measuring 10 miles by one mile, with just 150 residents and some 1200 Little Cayman iguanas.

“For a small place there’s a huge amount to do,” said Michael. “There’s much more to the Cayman Islands than perfect beaches and amazing marine life. It’s a fantastic place for food lovers and for families – I can’t wait to take my own.”

Mike Hallett’s account of his trip to the Cayman Islands will appear in a summer issue of Fabulous Food magazine.
