Wiklander and Carr steer Lightning to double win
New Swedish import Joakim Wiklander could be the find of the season if his first weekend in British ice ice hockey is anything to go by.

The 24 year old made his debut for Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday and had an immediate impact on the side as they showed a fire and desire to win that sometimes has not been present this season.

Wiklander bagged four assists as Lightning saw off Slough Jets 7-6 at Planet Ice and followed that up with an even better 4-2 victory at Slough the following evening. And on that occasion Wiklander scored his first goal for the team and had a hand in all three of the other goals.

The main beneficiary was Brit Adam Carr who had a hat-trick in the home leg and added two more a day later – all bar one goal coming with an assist by Wiklander

Contrast that with the double defeats to Jets just three weeks previously and the change in fortune and form was there to be seen. In December Lightning lacked the cutting edge when it mattered – this time the influence of the new signing was there to see.

The arrival of Wiklander resulted in big line changes for Lightning on Saturday as he partnered Carr and Clarke on the first line, Nick Poole and Andre Smulter being joined on the second by Michael Wales and James Archer switching to partner Grant McPherson and Matt Towalski.

And at the first break it looked to be a wrong move as Lightning trailed 3-0 by the 15th minute with goals by Steve Moria (11mins 06ssecs), Paddy Ward (11 mins 39secs) and Zoran Kozic (14mins 58secs).

But a Wales goal on the powerplay just four seconds from the break proved to be a life line and by the midway point of the game Lightning were back on terms.

Wiklander set up Carr to skate in from the side of the net and score at 23mins 32secs before Chris McEween fired a powerblast from distance off the backboards only for sniper Clarke to connect and promptly shoot past goalie Dean Skinns on 26mins 14secs to make it 3-3.

But that was not the end of Lightning's resurgence as they scored twice more before Jets got a sniff of the goal again.

It was Wiklander who provided the pass for Carr to shoot home on the powerplay at 31mins and the visitors were made to pay again when they were a man short at 35mins 49secs – this time it was James Archer grabbing the goal.

Finding themselves in front Lightning possibly relaxed a little too much and Jets equalised by the second break with goals from Moria – a well taken shot high into the goal at 38mins 19secs – with Scott Spearing making it five at 39mins 39secs.

Carr completed his hat-trick to edge the hosts ahead at 44mins 30secs but once more Jets came back with a Blaz Emersic powerplay goal at 46mins 53secs while Lukas Zatpoek was serving time for hooking.

However the hosts were in no mood to cave in and Wiklander was on hand to supply Clarke at 52mins 31secs for the winner.

The following night it took until 18mins 59secs for the first goal of the game at Slough and once more it was Carr on the mark – with Wiklander and Zatopek getting the assists.

One expected a big fightback by Jets in the second period but instead it was Lightning who took a grip on the game with Wiklander scoring his first goal for the side at 23mins 50secs – assisted by Clarke and Towalski.

While Jets were reeling from that the visitors struck again through Carr, assisted by Clarke and Wiklander at 24mins 23secs.

The hosts probably could hardly believe it when they found themselves trailing 4-0 at 33mins 30secs to a powerplay goal by Wales with the suppliers Andre Smulter and, yes, Wiklander again.

There was some joy for the home fans though as coach Moria finally got them on the scoresheet at 39mins 56secs.

However there was no way back for the home side as Lightning's defence refused to give way in the third period until nine seconds from the buzzer as Jets got their second goal – far too late to affect the result.
