MILTON Keynes Lightning have signed one of the most promising young British players in the country – former Peterborough Phantom James Archer.

The club have also announced the return of Gary Clarke as captain.
Archer, 19, bagged 39 goals and 23 assists for Phantoms in 2006-2007. Last year he returned to his Sheffield home after family problems but was then recruited by Elite League champions Coventry Blaze.

Player-coach Nick Poole said of Archer: "He is an exceptional young talent and he will play a key role in scoring."

Of Clarke he said: "I cannot imagine a Milton Keynes side without Gary. He excelled as captain last year and I'm chuffed to have him back."

The news of Clarke's re-signing received a huge cheer when it was announced to members of the team's supporters club on Wednesday at its annual meeting.

Few fans were fooled by team manager Vito Rausa's warning that he had both good and bad news to impart to fans - proceeding then to announce both Archer's and Clarke's signatures.

Rausa's ploy followed ice hockey forum rumours that Archer was being brought in to replace Clarke who was said to be on his way to another club for more money.

The team boss said top points scorer Clarke had indeed received several calls to move to the Elite League following his call up for the Great Britain team for the World Championships. However he said Clarke was not tempted by the money, preferring to remain in Milton Keynes with his wife and family.
