Elvis At Stax - out now - is a CD collection of tracks from his final studio recordings at the historic Stax studios in Memphis, in July and December of 1973.
‘Elvis At Stax bristles with energy and dynamism,’ says the press release, and our resident ‘King Expert’ (seriously, we have one) let his ears loose over the release and determined ‘It’s excellent...superb’.
In essence, what we have here is an essential purchase for the Elvis completist, and a great way to rediscover the latter career material which was apparently rush released the first time around as part of ‘contractual obligations to RCA’.
If you like, it’s an opportunity to see the material in a new light, and for some of you, maybe for the first time.
Elvis at Stax boasts 17 songs recorded at those two home-town sessions, just enough to sate the appetites of Elvis fans.
But there is much more to be had - a 40th anniversary 3CD chronicle of the nights Presley spent at Stax, is also ready and waiting.
Less than four years after these recordings were made, the King was dead, an untimely, tragic end to one of the greatest performers the world has ever seen.
As we remember last week’s anniversary of his death - on August 16, what better time to slip the CD into the player, up the volume and give a little hip-swivel to the big man?
We have copies to give away in this week’s competition.
To be in with a chance of winning one, simply tell us the name of the Memphis studio where Elvis recorded earlier recordings.
A Sun Studios
B Rain Studios
C Thunder Studios
