Imagine retirement living in safe surroundings, where you can continue to stay independent but help is at hand when you need it. That is the reality at Oaktree Court, close to picturesque Willen Lake near Milton Keynes, where owners have been so impressed by the retirement community they have encouraged their friends to move there with them.

What makes it unique is that every owner becomes a shareholder, with the opportunity to sit on the board of directors who make decisions about how it is run.

As one of Retirement Security’s 32 courts around the country, not-for-profit Oaktree Court provides an alternative way of living. There is on-site emergency alarm cover around-the-clock, every day of the year, with help just five minutes from your front door at any time that you need it.

However, when you make your choice from its 51 apartments and bungalows, you are welcome to turn it into your new home by making your own changes. Your apartment or bungalow comes with carpets, fitted kitchen and most have a wet room, but you bring your own furniture and gaining freeholder permission for alterations incurs no cost.

It offers a friendlier place to live, with no reason to stay lonely. You can order up to three-course meals in the shared dining room if you choose, and join films in the communal lounge along with activities from bingo and dominoes to opera evenings and kit fit sessions.

If you want to invite friends or relatives to stay, there is a guest room you can book to accommodate them.

Each ground floor home has a private patio, or you can choose to plant a flower bed in the beautiful shared gardens if gardening is your hobby.

Unusually for this type of development, there is no ground rent to pay. They aim to be transparent about charges, with no hidden costs.

Manager Gary Baxter said: “We provide an independent way of living, with help and support when you need it. Very often, people leave the decision to move until too late in life, once they have lost their partner, but we are offering the chance to plan ahead.

“Some of our owners still have a job but enjoy the chance to make friends and a new life for themselves here. Then they are ready for whatever life holds later, when they may need more support.”
