Newport are beaten in Senior Trophy final
Newport Pagnell Town boss Terry Shrieves was pulling no punches after seeing his side lose their Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy final 2-0 to Reading Town on Tuesday night.
In a match played at Abingdon United, the Swans conceded goals either side of the interval and went down 2-0 to their Hellenic League Premier Division opponents.
But Shrieves thinks the fixture wasn't played on an 'even playing field' and says his side never stood a chance of winning.
"The fact that the game was played 20 minutes from them and over an hour from us is a bit of a joke to start with," he said.
"The Senior Cup final is played at MK Dons but we end up playing on a field you wouldn't walk your dog on.
"It feels like everything is in favour of the sides from Berkshire as the likes of ourselves and Olney in North Bucks are out on a limb.
"There were 40 officials of the FA there and it was all about the jolly up. The whole thing stank."
Reading took the lead on the half hour and made the game safe with a penalty 10 minutes from time.
But the Swans boss says the game was ruined by bad refereeing and dangerous challenges.
"It sounds like sour grapes when you blame the ref but I really don't know what else to say," he said.
"We've picked up three or four injuries tonight from tackles that were not even given as free-kicks.
"At least in the league you know that games are played on an even playing field, but this ref comes from just down the road from them."
Newport bring the curtain down on the United Counties League Premier Division season on Saturday when they head to Long Buckby.
They still have a chance of winning the title, but need to win and hope that rivals S&L Corby lose to Holbeach. But even that is unlikely to be enough with goal difference heavily stacked in Corby's favour.
