Council Tories blame controlling Lib Dems
The government's decision to step in to raise school exam pass rates is a further indictment of Liberal Democrats handling of education, say the Tories.
Schools Secretary Ed Balls has ordered setting up of an education improvement board in Milton Keynes and at Leicester, Blackpool and Gloucester.
Among other targets it must aim at increasing the percentage of pupils gaining five good GCSE passes and ensure there are no longer schools where less than 30 per cent of pupils get five GCSEs.
Milton Keynes Council cabinet member for schools Councillor Sandra Clark said it gave the authority the opportunity to "do some dynamic stuff".
Council Opposition Tory education spokesman Councillor Andy Dransfield said the government's intervention was another chapter in the "sorry saga" of the Lib Dems' record on education.
