Media student Matthew Alden-Farrow took the coveted prize in front of a packed audience that included celebrity guest Pub Landlord, Al Murray, who is the son of college governor Juliette.

Matthew, aged 18, was home educated after a challenging time at school and his secondary education was entirely conducted by his parents.

He took the big step of going to Milton Keynes College in 2006 because he wanted to re-integrate himself into mainstream education.

"It was absolutely daunting and incredibly terrifying at times as it was a completely alien environment for me," admits Matthew of Shenley Lodge. "I came very close to quitting but decided to keep going and have loved every minute of it ever since."

Speaking of his Student of the Year Award he said: "I was absolutely gobsmacked to win, I was totally shell shocked when they announced my name as I truly never expected it.

"It's been an absolute roller coaster journey for me. Being home educated for five years after suffering terrible bullying at school I now feel that I've come out on top. They were wrong and I was right, I believed in myself and now I have won."

Matthew hopes to eventually work in television.

College Principal Rob Badcock spoke proudly about the winner: "Matthew is a popular member of his group and he is heading for a triple distinction in his studies. A high achiever, he is highly respected for his reliability and skill."

Matthew's mum Helen added: "We can't thank the college enough for their support and encouragement which has been fantastic. Matthew has worked hard but he could not have achieved all this without the help of the wonderful staff at the college."

Matthew was one of 22 award winners, selected from the 20,000 students at the college. The Milton Keynes Citizen Newspaper Award went to Sam Marsh from MK6 Sixth Form.

A special award was presented in memory of former student Ernest Ansah, who died tragically in a car accident before he had time to fulfil his undoubted potential.

Teacher of the Year, voted for by the students, went to Minoti Dutta for her outstanding work in the Business and Professional department.
