THE normally sleepy market town of Olney is set for a massive punch-up this Saturday – and everyone's invited to watch!
To mark the 365th anniversary of the Battle of Olney Bridge, one of the lesser-known battles of the English Civil War, the episode is to be recreated.
Emberton Country Park will ring with the clash of pike and musket, the roar of cannon and the ra
ttle of drums as members of the famed Sealed Knot get stuck in to see who IS best – Royalist or Roundhead?
Among those taking part will be Prince Rupert's Blew Regiment of Foote, with exquisitely attired members willing to answer questions from the public once the dust has settled.
The event will also feature the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to the original skirmish.
Battle commences from 11am until 12.30pm and admission is free!
In 1643 Parliament held Newport Pagnell on the important drovers' road and Olney was an outpost. Prince Rupert held Northampton for the King and marched south on Olney to take Newport.
The Parliamentarians, taken by surprise, fell back and made a defiant stand at the bridge. The Royalists were set for victory until a
rumour that Parliamentarian reinforcements were on their way prompted them to flee.
