BLETCHLEY Leisure Centre has issued a challenge to swimmers to join its annual Swimathon.

The event will help raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care or the Big Splash mile for Sport Relief.

This is the first year the centre has hosted such an event and there are currently 17 entrants.

Now the centre, which is one of only two Milton Keynes pools to be awarded host status for 2012, is hoping to beat that score and needs more swimmers to sign up. There are 96 places available.

Two swimathon sessions will take place at the centre’s eight lane 25 metre swimming pool on Saturday, April 28 from 5pm to 7.30pm and then from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Participants choose between swimming as far as they can within the two hours or setting themselves their own personal challenge.

Manager of Bletchley Leisure Centre, Sarah Clark, said: “We are the only pool in Milton Keynes to host this UK-wide event and we want to challenge swimmers in the area to come and take part.

“This is a great community event and a chance to raise money for a very good cause while having a challenge to work towards. We have even provided some training tips for those who want to take part on our website.”

Lap counters will be provided at the pool as well as music and plenty of space for spectators during the challenge to allow family and friends to cheer participants on.

Participants can register online at www.swimathon.org where they can also obtain sponsorship forms.

They can also download training tips for the swimathon from the Bletchley Leisure Centre website at www.hertsmereleisure.co.uk/bletchley+leisure+centre/swimming
