Prime Minister David Cameron visited Mercedes Benz yesterday to mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week.

During his visit to the car giants Tongwell base he told apprentices that he had a vision of a future when students leaving school would either go onto university or into an apprenticeship.

But the PM added that basic levels of Maths and English needed to be improved before his dream becomes a reality.

MP for Milton Keynes North Mark Lancaster, who attended the PM’s visit along with his MK South counterpart Iain Stewart, said: “It was fantastic to welcome the Prime Minister to Milton Keynes yet again and I was delighted to hear him speak so positively about the opportunities apprenticeships have to offer.

“With an increase of 99.9 per cent in apprenticeships being started since 2010 in Milton Keynes, we really are a national leader and it was great to be recognised as such.

“I would encourage young people when making decisions about their next step to consider apprenticeships as a practical alternative to doing a degree.”

And Mr Stewart added: “I am very pleased that the Prime Minister came to Milton Keynes to highlight the importance of apprenticeships. There have been over one million new apprenticeship starts since 2010 – a higher number than under the previous Government.

“Apprenticeships are a valid career option and I am really pleased that young people in Milton Keynes are taking advantage of it.”

But Labour parliamentary spokesman for Milton Keynes, Andrew Pakes, said: ““It is always good to see senior politicians visit our great city, but David Cameron failed to answer some big questions about apprenticeships. The number of young people signing up for an apprenticeship has dropped over the last year.

“The Government is making life more difficult for young people, downgrading vocational education at school, trebling student fees to £9,000 a year and axing the Educational Maintenance Allowance.”
