Milton Keynes – and Stevenage in Hertfordshire – have been highlighted as templates for new housing developments in the South East of England.

Labour leader Ed Miliband, writing in a blog, says housing shortages and unaffordable homes are causing huge problems for London people and employers both in the public and private sector.

Mr Miliband says he has appointed Sir Michael Lyons to lead an independent housing commission with one aim of addressing the housing shortage immediately on entering office.

He said: “A key plank will be creating new towns in sustainable locations where people want to live, just like earlier generations did in places such as Stevenage and Milton Keynes. Labour will kick-start the next generation of new towns and garden cities around the capital to ease the pressure on London.”
