Companies that want to enter next year’s Milton Keynes Marathon Geoffrey Leaver Corporate Relay can now do so.

The relay runs alongside the main marathon event on May 6, pitting teams of four runners against each other, each competitor running a leg of six or seven miles.

Some teams, representing local businesses, have already begun their training regimes.

The winning side last April was from Motor Insurers Bureau. The team’s Dan Wylie said: “Despite some seriously hostile weather conditions we really enjoyed running in the corporate relay last April. In total we had four teams made up of 16 runners of different abilities. We’re very proud to be the first and reigning champions and we’re already working out how we can hold on to our title this year”.

The relay event is characterised by a strong element of friendly competition as businesses compete to be seen as the fittest, the fastest or the best charity fundraisers.

The 2012 challenge raised more than £40,000 for MK Dons Sports and Education Trust, an organisation committed to improving quality of life through both education and healthy living. Teams were asked to split their fundraising between MK Dons SET and a charity of their choice.

Race director Andy Hully said: “Last year the corporate relay was one of the most enjoyable elements of the marathon, we had a fantastic level of participation with 99 teams completing the race. People mixed really well, so in the end the event was more than just a race. it was also a great networking event.”
