A WOBURN Sands company won a prestigious runner-up prize in the East of England Business Champions awards.

High Street-based Lightsout Computer scooped the second place slot in the business innovation category, sponsored by the business and technology centre in Stevenage.

Lightsout was formed in 1993 and has developed award-winning software and a network of offices throughout England and Wales. It provides SMEs and other small organisations with adapted outsourcing services.

Its business includes full and partial outsourcing, IT support, consultancy, project management and delivery, bespoke software and hardware solutions.

The category was won by Hertfordshire’s Simply Amazing Training, which not only won two categories but also the overall champion title.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Stephen Rhodes, formerly a presenter on BBC 3 Counties Radio.

The headline sponsor at the event held at Tewin Bury Farm Hotel, near Welwyn Garden City, on October 13 was the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

Out of six category winners, five hailed from Hertfordshire.

FSB regional chairman Ian Cording said businesses had much to gain from entering awards, not just from winning.

“Awards give every business that crucial opportunity for critical self-examination,” said Mr Cording. “You can get to see what you are doing, warts and all.”

Organiser Damian Cummins from Events and PR, based in Wicken, near Deanshanger, said: “We had a tremendous response to these inaugural awards and it is great to see small businesses in these tough times rise to the challenge.”

The awards were run alongside the Herts Expo which saw 45 exhibitors putting their products in front of some 350 visitors to the countryside venue.
