Fundraising heroes from Milton Keynes and Bedford have smashed the £1million barrier in aid of good causes.

Extra Mile Challenges organises a sponsored 500-mile relay cycling challenge in Europe every September and has reached the magnificent milestone after just 10 years.

At an event yesterday (Monday) at stadium:MK to launch this year’s cycle route, Heald Solicitors’ senior partner Martin Banham-Hall, who chairs the trustees of Extra Mile Challenges, is looking for new teams to get involved.

Mr Banham-Hall said: “It’s an exceptional achievement to have broken the £1million-mark and we must take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in Extra Mile Challenges over the past 10 years. The Rotary Clubs have been fundamental in organising the event, the cyclists have been phenomenal in raising the money, and our commercial supporters’ financial contributions have done a fantastic job in subsidising the cost of participation and covering overheads.”

Extra Mile Challenges, a charitable organisation that raises money for other charities, is run by the Rotary Club of Bedford Park, The Rotary Club of Milton Keynes Grand Union and Heald Solicitors in Milton Keynes.

Around 200 cyclists participate in teams of four, involving local businesses and individuals. One third of the money goes to three local charities each year, and the remaining two thirds goes to each team’s nominated charity. Last year money was raised for St John’s Ambulance in Buckinghamshire, Willen Hospice in Milton Keynes, East Anglia Air Ambulance and the organising Rotary Clubs’ charity funds.

Sponsors for 2013 include Big Rock Climbing Centre, Clydesdale Ltd, Heald Solicitors, Trek Bicycle Store, DLP Group, Delomac Roofing and Briton ems.
