A Milton Keynes food company that aims to send nothing to landfill has been praised for spreading the ‘no waste’ message even further – to its suppliers and workforce.
Buckingham Foods, in Wimblington Drive, is a part of the Adelie Food Group which makes 1.8 million sandwiches a week across its seven sites.
The company recently picked up a Silver Food & Drink Federation Environmental Leadership Award (FDF EL) for its staff engagement campaigns and a commitment to using sustainable recycling technology.
Adelie has been working in partnership with environmental consultancy firm, WasteSolve, on a Ready, Steady, Green! campaign that encourages staff to view waste as a valuable resource rather than a disposable commodity. Food waste is recycled into pet food or turned into energy or fertiliser.
Steve Wood, Adelie’s chief operations officer said: “Reaching zero waste to landfill was a huge milestone for the company, and this award is really the icing on the cake for all the staff that have been at the heart of our recycling initiatives.”
Kate Cawley, of WasteSolve said: “In a tough economic climate it is more important than ever that companies can prove their green credentials, and build sustainable relationship with their waste. We can’t wait to take Adelie even further beyond zero landfill.”
