Graffiti celebrates sales success

FRESH from hosting record crowds of Christmas shoppers, thecentre:mk has splashed out on some major new artwork – including some top notch graffiti.
The centre was “incredibly busy” before Christmas and also on Boxing Day when 1,000 bargain hunters queued from 1am for the Next sale, according to director Robert Hall.
He said: “This is a crucial time for retailers with so many guests tightening their purse strings. However the phenomenal success we have seen over the Christmas and sale launch period is evidence of the strong local and regional pull of thecentre:mk.”
Mr Hall is confident the record footfall figures will continue this week as the sales reach full swing.
He commissioned graffiti artists Mef and Kem to create a ‘visual spectacular’ for the side of a hoarding around the multi-million pound Next redevelopment, alongside John Lewis.
The artwork spans 50 metres of the mall and sits in line with the temporary sculpture gallery installed last autumn.
“It has really brought to life the malls,” said Mr Hall.
Johann Bester, the centre’s public exhibition creator, added: “The urban art looks fantastic and we are really very excited following our most recent projects on the mall to have created such exciting artwork.”
Continuing the arty theme, the centre will this year sponsor the Woburn ARTBEAT sculpture and art exhibition, which will be held in the gardens of Woburn Abbey and Woburn village between April and August. There will be 80 exhibitors, including several famous international artists, and their work will be displayed in more than 20 different locations.
