Even after 50 years, Maurice Rust still gets the same thrill out of passing on his vast gardening knowledge.

Maurice has been working for Frosts Garden Centre in Woburn Sands for half a century, and has come full circle.

From fuelling the boilers to plants manager to offering customers advice on their gardens, he has done it all.

Maurice said:“I’ve seen the business grow, the landscape has changed beyond recognition, the whole place has changed.”

“I started when I was 16. I’ve built up a vast knowledge of the industry in that time. I’ve transgressed from the glass houses, I was the plants manager here for 25 years, and today I’ve come back full circle, and now I’m back helping people.

“I enjoy it just as much today as I ever did. It’s a different job now.”

Even after retiring, he still keeps himself busy as ever.

“Although I’m officially retired, I work three days a week,” he said. “I advise customers and go out to people’s gardens and advise them.

“I’m one of the judges for the Milton Keynes Garden on the Year Competition and work with the garden club here at Frosts.”

The biggest thrill he gets from the job though is passing on his knowledge to the next generation of young gardners.

Maurice started the Frosts Growing Gardeners Club three years ago, and has seen it thrive, citing it as his finest legacy.

He said: “I run the children’s garden club, which has more than 1,000 members and I think it’s one of my greatest achievements.

“We’ve been running it since May 2010, and it started from nothing. It’s vital work to educate the next generation of gardeners.

“I love talking to the children because I feel I’m passing my knowledge on to a new generation. It’ll be one of my legacies.” James Frost, managing director, praised Maurice’s enthusiasm and dedication to the job.
