Newport Pagnell Tesco delayed again
Tesno protestors fought against the planning application - now Tesco has delayed construction of its Newport Pagnell store
Building of the controversial new Tesco store in Newport Pagnell has once again been delayed – this time until 2014 or 2015.
This week the company confirmed work “may” begin then, but could give no confirmation. Tesco fought for two years for permission to build the 14,000 sq ft store on the site of the old Aston Martin works in Tickford Street.
Protesters formed a group called Tesno to fight the planning application, saying it would strike the death knell for Newport Pagnell’s High street shops. But planning permission was granted and the store was due to be built last year. At the last minute Tesco cancelled its plans, saying it would review the situation later in the year.
On Tuesday a spokesman said: It is still our intention to build the store in Newport Pagnell, providing jobs and an increase in retail choice and value for customers. It is currently anticipated that building works may begin in 2014/15 but this will be confirmed nearer the time.”
