THE boss of a firm that won a top title at last year’s Milton Keynes and North Bucks Chamber Business Excellence Awards has been appointed a non-executive director of an industry standards body.

Nigel Walton, director at Abbot Fire Group, has been appointed non-executive director at BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment).

BAFE is an independent organisation dedicated to improving standards in fire protection, and is the registration body for companies who achieve third party certification for their fire protection services.

Mr Walton has 25 years’ experience in the fire industry and is also chairman of IFEDA, the Independent Fire Engineering & Distributors Association.

Abbot Fire Group was award Business of the Year 2011 at the Milton Keynes and North Bucks Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards

Mr Walton said: “I strongly believe in raising industry standards, and believe BAFE is in an ideal position to do this. Increasing awareness of BAFE is just part of how I’ll be actively involved within the organisation.”

He added: “Companies providing fire safety products and services, such as supply, installation and servicing of portable fire extinguishers, and fire alarms, would be well placed to achieve BAFE certification. Third party accreditation proves to customers that they are employing dedicated and competent fire safety specialists.”

Abbot Fire Group Ltd, based in Gawcott, near Buckingham, has been celebrating it’s 10th anniversary and is moving into new premises – next door to the old HQ.

Mr Walton said: “I have to commend the hard-working team at Abbot Fire who work enthusiastically and diligently, and have contributed to the successful growth of the business over the last 10 years”.
