Start of demolition at Maxwell House in Bletchley to make way for a new computer datacentre
A NEW £35million high tech datacentre in Bletchley is set to create “several hundred” jobs as well as transforming a run down part of town.
The old Robert Maxwell-owned Oyez print works at Maxwell House, in Third Avenue, is being turned into a computer data storage centre.
The 6.8 acre site will feature a power supply equivalent to the demand from a town the size of Swindon, in Wiltshire, said Edward Jones, a director of commercial real estate group PMB Holdings.
Mr Jones, who visited the site this morning (Thursday), said Bletchley was ideally placed to house the MK DataVault datacentre, which could be used to electronically store information from the City of London. Companies in the capital are looking to control the cost of power and to reduce potential risks.
“Finding good sites for datacentres isn’t easy,” said director Johnny de Lisle. “They have to be away from flight paths and flood plains and close to power.”
There is a power supply, the Bletchley Bulk Supply Point, less than 0.6 miles away, from where there will be a dual feed into the site, which will be fully energised this summer.
But there will also be two transformers and an electricity sub-station on the site. It will be capable of generating its own power if the grid fails.
Peter Beckwith, founder and chairman of PMB Holdings said the UK is expecting to invest about £2.19 billion in data centres this financial year and with more and more people using data-hungry electronic devices that is a market set to grow.
He added that the demolition of Maxwell House would also help erase the “monstrous presence” of the media mogul who died in 1991.
