CONSTRUCTION work is due to start in weeks on a flagship development at a Milton Keynes shopping centre.

The multi-million pound refurbishment of John Lewis at thecentre:mk has been projected to boost customer spending by around £10-15 million per annum.

John Lewis believes it will help the city to retain much of the spending which has been migrating to other regional centres.

The refurbishment and upgrade was given planning permission and listed building consent by Milton Keynes Council’s planning committee on January 19, despite concerns expressed by English Heritage over the centre’s listed building status.

Paul Hunt, MD of John Lewis Milton Keynes, said: “Our multi million pound investment in our department store will benefit local shoppers and will contribute significantly to the vitality and appeal of Milton Keynes and the centre:mk. This will also help to ensure the town retains its rightful role as the regional shopping destination of choice.”

Sales area at the flagship store will be increased by about 20,000 sq-ft and the store will have more products, new brands and ‘new retail concepts’.
