PLUMBERS, gas fitters and heating engineers have been targeted by the HM Revenue and Customs as potential cash-in-hand tax dodgers.
The taxman launched the Plumbers Tax Safe Plan (PTSP) in March and has been chasing up traders who did not join.
HMRC’s softly-softly approach is due to end on August 31 and tax dodgers can expect to be hit hard.
Hundreds of traders are believed not to have come forward. They could face hefty penalties as well as criminal prosecution.
Mike Wells, HMRC’s director of risk and intelligence, said: “We are determined to ensure everyone pays their fair share and, since May, have begun a series of enquiries targeting people in the plumbing industry. More than 600 will be under way by the end of this month, with many more to follow.”
