Thousands of shoppers splashed the cash in Milton Keynes when the Black Friday sales took place.
Dozens of retailers at centre:mk took part in the promotion, offering discounts of up to 70 per cent. Electronic retailer Game even opened its doors at midnight to welcome shoppers.
Centre director James Waugh said: “It is always a very busy day but this year has smashed expectations with many stores selling out of some lines by lunch time. Our footfall was up 3% year on year by midday and a number of retailers, large and small are recording record sales figures.”
Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Since the early 2000s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in America, with many major retailers opening early and offering promotional sales, and it has spread to the UK in recent years.
