A retail leader in Milton Keynes says he’d love to see Waitrose come back to the city centre.

Waitrose has announced plans to leave the Food Centre in the spring and move to a new development next to Oakgrove School.

I would love to see them stay

Paul Hunt is managing director at the John Lewis megastore at thecentre:mk and he also chairs the Shopping Centre Association.

“I would love to see Waitrose stay in the centre of MK,” said Mr Hunt. “But the challenge they have is to do something like we have done and invest in a building that could be transformed.

“That is much more difficult in the Food Centre.

“The move will leave a bit of a hole for us but I hope one day to see a way and a route for Waitrose to come back into CMK.”

John Lewis and Waitrose are both owned by the John Lewis Partnership but Mr Hunt says it is not his call.

Mr Hunt was interviewed at length by business editor David Tooley on the eve of the completion of a John Lewis revamp. Read Business Citizen on Thursday.
