Almost 22,000 people in Milton Keynes are ‘unsung heroes’ devoting their lives to caring for a needy relative or friend.
That’s the shock statistic from Carers MK, which provides support and even treats for the care givers themselves.
Next week is national carers’ week and the charity is keen to spread its message to as many of the “hidden” unpaid carers as possible.
It is taking over the community kiosk, opposite the market at thecentre:mk, on Friday, June 14, and hoping carers will pop in for a chat.
“We hope that we will meet many people who haven’t known about us before,” said spokesman Sue Browning.
“Helping to identify hidden carers is a big part of our work. A large number try to cope alone and they are frequently isolated and depressed.
“We are here to help alleviate this situation by offering practical and emotional support, as well as information and advice.”
Sue said carers often carry on regardless and never worry about themselves.
For this reason Carers MK is holding a Living Well event at Acorn House next Wednesday to provide information about healthy eating.
