Charity helps hard-up mums to keep babies

A charity that helps hard-up mums provide for their babies is appealing for donations – and more ‘customers’.

Baby Basics was set up 10 years ago to provide nappies, clothes and equipment for new parents in need.

The charity, part of Kings Church in Wolverton, helps 350 women a year – one almost every day.

“They are women of all ages and from all different backgrounds. The thing they have in common is that they are desperate to keep their babies but have no money to buy the essentials they need for them,” said volunteer Melanie Lewis.

Baby Basics initially provides a Moses basket crammed full of nappies, clothes, toiletries and blankets. They continue to offer help until the child reaches the age of three.

Said Melanie: “Many of the women manage successfully to turn their lives around and some even come back to us to work as volunteers or make donations as a way of saying thank you.”
