The founder of Climb Your Mountain has been forced to stop running in his attempt to complete 30 marathons in 30 days to raise funds for the charity.

However, with the help of the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Charlie Wardle has carried on with the challenge by using a specially designed ‘hand bike’ and successfully completed a marathon in just under nine hours using this equipment.

Charlie, 37, said “I was forced to stop running or walking due to injury but wanted to continue the challenge in some way and thought what are the options for people who have longer term injuries or disabilities? I made contact with the National Spinal Injuries Centre based in Aylesbury and they suggested this hand bike, whereby you sit in a wheelchair and propel yourself with your hands by rotating pedals on a front wheel. It is not really designed to be doing marathons and was really hard work but we did it!”

Along with 13 other walkers last Saturday they completed the 26.2 mile course in Milton Keynes as part of the ‘Run with Charlie’ challenge whereby people join Charlie in the aim of doing 30 marathons in 30 days. The aim is to raise £30k for the charity and is being sponsored by the fashion brands company, Fossil, who are based in Milton Keynes.

Charlie hopes to be able to run again soon and complete all the marathons one way or another. So far over 70 people have taken part in the challenge and 21 people have completed a marathon for the first time. Charlie said “It is great that so many people have supported this challenge and have achieved something amazing for themselves. It just goes to show what can be done.”
