Cinema Review: The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit - our reviewer calls it a hit

NINE years have passed since the release of ‘The Return of the King’.

It’s fair to say Peter Jackson had a heavy weight on his shoulders to produce something worthy of matching the sheer scale the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy brought to our screens.

That’s not to say that you must watch the Lord of the Rings to understand the world this film is set in.

The films prologue, while short, is concisely and expertly executed leaving no questions unanswered for the new viewer.

Martin Freeman plays a young, introverted, materialistic Bilbo Baggins whose calm world is shattered by a group of 13 Dwarves and a wizard, who offer him the chance to embark on a quest to take back the stolen kingdom of Erebor.

Freeman’s performance is the best he’s ever given, a truly underrated actor who has finally been given the chance to spread his wings in a Hollywood blockbuster and has delivered beyond all expectation.

Comfortable scenes are created for the original fans, as actors reprise their roles aiding in the seamless transition between the trilogies. Howard Shore has returned with his phenomenal orchestra to recapture the magic that could have easily slipped away after all this time.

Overall Peter Jackson has excelled himself again in JRR Tolkien’s world, to create a cinematic masterpiece that captures the imaginations of both old and new fans.

There is no doubt the rest of ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy will be just as epic as audiences could have hoped for.

I don’t believe anyone could leave the cinema with thoughts that Jackson is incapable of living up to the great expectations generated by this film.
