CIVIL engineer, English teacher, political candidate and campaigner.

Bill McCloskey has lived a varied life – and is not one to let his brain rest.

The 80-year-old, who has Parkinson’s Disease and now lives in residential care at Caton House in Bletchley, has focused his many talents on becoming an expert quizmaster.

Despite his speech and writing ability being impaired by Parkinson’s, Mr McCloskey has invented his own word association game.

And the octogenerian is now encouraging residents throughout the city he helped to build to take on his latest challenge.

During his lifetime, Mr McCloskey has worked as a civil engineer in the UK and the middle east – including working for Milton Keynes Development Corporation, taught English to Yugoslavs in Libya and stood as a Labour Party candidate in local elections.

In the early part of the last decade he successfully campaign to have a Parkinson’s Disease nurse taken on at Milton Keynes Hospital.

Friend David Barrow said: “His life is now hard. Between his bed and his wheelchair, he relies of carers for his most basic needs.

“But his spirit is still strong. He has a keen thirst for knowledge, often asking me to ‘Google’ obscure subjects for him.”

Staff at Caton House recognised Mr McCloskey’s skills and suggested he might be good at crosswords.

And since then word games have become his life – leading him to create his own quiz.

Called ‘The Super Human Quizlympics 2012,’ an aside to the successful Paralympic Games taking place at the moment, the quiz involves solving short clues to come up with three letter alternatives; for example, American Idol becomes ‘JFK’ and Big Bang is ‘TNT’.
