College students cut the mustard

Catering students from Milton Keynes College cooked up a storm at a highly prestigious culinary competition coming away with a remarkable eighteen medals.

The fifteen budding chefs from the College baked, boiled and fried their way to three gold medals, two of which were best in class, four silver medals with one best in class, eleven bronze medals and eight certificates of merit at the Wessex Salon Culinaire event held at Brockenhurst College in the New Forest.

Catering tutor, Stephen Naghi said, “Each student did the College proud and conducted themselves in a professional manner throughout the day. It was also great to see the students supporting and encouraging each other. To come away with eighteen medals between them is an outstanding achievement, even better than last year. It’s a great testament to the high standards achieved by people taking the catering course at Milton Keynes College.”

The highly rated event is held in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs and is an excellent platform for student chefs to get a first taste of competition. The students entered hot, cold and restaurant service pitting their skills against some extremely talented opposition from all over the country.

Winning Milton Keynes competitor, Rebecca Houseago said, “Thanks to this competition I have been surprised at my own ability. I know that most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence or take the risks yet I never thought that would include me.”

Fellow competition chef, Lauren McSporran agreed. “I am really proud of my team members and how well they did for themselves and the college.”

Members of the public can enjoy the culinary delights served up by the students in the College’s restaurant The Chef in Waiting in Sherwood Drive, Bletchley. For opening times and to reserve a table call 01908 637373 or email chefinwaiting@mkcollege.ac.uk
