Friends of the Caribbean will be hosting the 50th Independence of Jamaica & Trinidad and Tobago with a giant Gala Ball celebration in Milton Keynes.
This 5th annual event will also see awards presented to outstanding British Reggae performers for their contribution to Caribbean life in the UK.
As Milton Keynes is uniquely located between the Olympic City and Birmingham who is hosting the Jamaican team, FOTC is hoping to attract some Caribbean athletes to visit our city and join in the milestone celebration.
Chairman, Wain McIntosh promised that the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel at the MK Dons Stadium will erupt in Caribbean rhythm and vibes featuring reggae performances including internationally acclaimed duo Mafia & Fluxy. Saxophonist Lascelles James will also be wooing the guests with renditions from his extensive repertoire, with Jamaican comedian Tony Hendrix keeping things together.
In attendance will be local MP Mark Lancaster with High Commissioners from the Caribbean Islands and well known celebrities from the community. The festivities kick off at 6pm on the 14th of July with a cocktail reception, Steel Band, Dinner, Raffle and entertainment until 2am. Proceeds from the evening will be shared between Alpha Boys home a Jamaican charity and FOTC’s mentoring programme within local secondary schools in the City.
All of this is against the backdrop of black and minority ethnic groups, currently making up about 19.5 per cent of the city’s population, which has been contributing to all sectors of local life over the last 30 years. This is all so evident in areas of Education, Health, the Law and small businesses. With this representation on the increase mainly in the dual heritage population, Caribbean’s influence and contribution will only move from strength to strength.
If last year is anything to go by, the 350+ guest expected will have a musical blast reminiscing 50 years of Caribbean music. Proceeds from last year’s event went to Prostate cancer and the sponsorship of students in St. Lucia, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Details can be found at
