The best golfers from across the country visited Abbey Hill’s Main Course this year, for a special Medal Winners Day.

The public pay-and-play facility – part of BGL Golf, the UK’s leading golf course owner and operator – invited the winners of society matches from throughout 2012 to compete in the special event, with 70 golfers from across the country challenging for the honour of being champion of champions.

Played over the manicured fairways of the Main Course, 18 holes couldn’t split the top four golfers each scored 40 Stableford points to finish atop the leaderboard.

Thanks to a four-under-handicap back nine, Phil Gardner scooped the first prize on countback, with Tim Mitchell sneaking into second, on the inward nine, by a mere point from third placed Edward Bates, whose score had to be traced to just the final six holes to separate him from Owen Brown, who came fourth.

Gordon Forster, Abbey Hill Golf Centre General Manager, said: “Every year we welcome hundreds of golfers from across the country as part of golf society groups, and we wanted to reward them for choosing Abbey Hill by offering their winner the opportunity to return with a guest and compete to be crowned best of the best.

“It was very exciting to welcome them back for this competition and pleasing to see it so well attended, with 35 returning golfers plus their guests taking part.

“Abbey Hill offers a variety of packages for societies and corporate days, and with Christmas fast approaching, golfers can take advantage of our yuletide offers.”
