The Open University is collaborating with reading charity Booktrust to understand how digital technology can be used more effectively to encourage reading.

Professor Karen Littleton of the OU said: “Technology is an integral part of people’s everyday lives. With increasing numbers of people using smartphones, tablets and eReaders, this is a great opportunity to explore how new digital technologies can enrich Booktrust’s programmes and change even more lives through reading.”

The project will run in 2014 with the OU examining how the charity works with a view to helping it develop a strategy that will make the most of new technologies. Drawing on the OU’s expertise in digital platforms and education, the charity will benefit with a new vision of how to become the ‘go-to’ partner for parents and eduction bodies.

Booktrust’s director of business development,Keith Gilbey, said: “This project is strategically important for Booktrust. Digital technology is transforming the teaching of reading and writing and we want to be at the forefront of that transformation. We are thrilled to be working with experts from The OU.”
