A CITY Sea Cadet has made the final shortlist for the prestigious Duke of Westminster Award.
Leading Cadet Tom Snell was one of an initial 200 Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps cadets from around the country nominated for the award.
He has made it through the first two rounds of shortlisting and is now in a final list of 21, Tom will spend several days of team activities, public speaking and interviews at Outposts; an adventure training centre in Somerset.
One participant will receive the award itself and they will join eight runners-up with a visit to No. 10 Downing Street and a three-week trip to South Africa where the nine cadets will engage in a community project as well as hiking and going on safari. Even if he does not make the final nine, Tom will receive a level three Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) certificate as a result of his attendance at Outposts.
That said, Tom has his eyes on the prize and is busy preparing himself for the final selection.
To be nominated for the award, cadets had to be enrolled, or to have completed a BTEC under the auspices of CVQO; the cadet forces vocational qualifications organisation. Tom was the nominated sea cadet for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. He recently completed a BTEC in electrical and mechanical engineering and is in the process of completing another BTEC through CVQO; this time in Public Services.
Tom has been a member of TS Whaddon, the Milton Keynes Sea Cadet Corps Unit based in Kiln Farm since 2008. He is presently in year 12 at Denbigh Academy. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire’s Cadet last November.
