A ground-breaking £5 million building project will officially begin at The Royal Latin School on Tuesday.

The grammar school is celebrating the start of construction on a state-of-the-art new science and technology building with a turf cutting ceremony.

Staff and pupils are looking forward to the cutting-edge laboratories within the aptly-named ‘Discovery Centre’, which has been developed as part of the school’s 600 Campaign to improve facilities by 2023, the school’s 600th anniversary.

The innovative building has been designed to prepare pupils for practical studies at university and beyond as the facilities will reflect commercial science environments.

Local businesses and universities are set to collaborate with students to prepare them for entry into careers in the science and technology sectors.

Headteacher, David Hudson, will welcome guests, including British businessman Sir Stuart Hampson, former chairman of the John Lewis Partnership and current High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, from 9.30am for the ceremony.

Mr Hudson said: “I am indebted to the large number of people who have worked so tirelessly to make the Discovery Centre a reality.

“It is incredible to think that we are just over a year away from seeing students learning in such an innovative building.

“There is more fundraising to do, however, with £400,000 still needed to complete the project.

“We are still working hard to attract donations both large and small.”

Norfolk-based construction company R G Carter Ltd will begin work on February 24.

David Hudson will cut the first turf, assisted by two students and Mayor of Buckingham, Councillor Ruth Newell, who is a former pupil.

Guests will be able to view the latest floor plans for the Discovery Centre.

The 600 Campaign is set to go on to deliver a performing arts centre and a new sixth form centre over the next decade.

John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons and Lead Patron of the 600 Campaign, said: “I am delighted that construction of the Discovery Centre is commencing.

“I’m thrilled that Buckingham will have such a splendid facility from which the school and wider community will benefit.”
