Cost of dying to increase by one tenth

PROPOSALS to increase crematorium and cemetery charges by 10 per cent has been slammed as an “unfair death tax” by a councillor.

Liberal Democrat leader Sam Crooks has also criticised the ruling Tories for described the increase as a ‘business opportunity.’

“That’s appalling,” he said. “Taking more money on this scale from people when they are at their most distressed and vulnerable can’t be justified.”

The new charges are part of a round of price increases, which include a 6.1 per cent rent rise for council house tenants.

“That’s nearly £5 a week just when we’re already facing higher fuel charges and food prices,” said Sam, who is urging the council to chop unnecessary bureaucracy instead.
