THOUSANDS of city council taxpayers were sent incorrect bills due to a “software issue” at the civic offices, the Citizen can reveal.
The bills for direct debit and monthly payers demanded the wrong number of instalments.
Within 24 hours red-faced council bosses had realised the blunder and reissued the bills, complete with a letter of apology.
The letter stated: ‘Due to a software issue a small number of the 2012/13 demand notices (bills) recently issued showed the wrong number of instalments, and one of these was sent to you...We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.’
When questioned, the council admitted the ‘small number’ of affected bills was 4,900 – five per cent of the city’s council taxpayers.
A spokesman denied the error had cost the council money.
“Issuing the correction has been done at no cost,” she said.
