A couple are gearing up to celebrate their first wedding anniversary in an unusual way by cycling 19 miles for Parkinson’s UK.
Martin and Samantha Bangs, 39 and 43, from Newport Pagnell will take part in Pedal for Parkinson’s – Stratford-upon-Avon, on Sunday, June 12.
The couple will be cycling in memory of Martin’s father, Alan Bangs, who lived with Parkinson’s until he died in 2014 of a heart condition.
Samantha said: “Martin and I have been together 15 years and married last year. When this event came up we thought what a wonderful way to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, to do this great thing in memory of Alan and his support for the charity.
“We hope to raise £400 to help with current research programmes as Alan took part in research for Parkinson’s. We believe Alan would have been incredibly proud of us as we will be of ourselves when we cross the finish line.”
The couple have set up an online sponsorship page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/The-Bangers
There is still time to sign up to Pedal for Parkinson’s.
Starting at Stratford Racecourse, cyclists can choose between a 19-mile blast, 39- mile blaze or 57-mile burn routes though the county’s beautiful countryside.
Film and TV actor Enzi Cilenti is the Champion of Cycling for Parkinson’s UK in 2016.
Enzo, who has supported the charity since his father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012, adds: “I would like to say thank you and good luck to Martin and Samantha.
“My father and I like to cycle as much as we can. He finds that exercise like cycling helps him manage his symptoms, so we often go out on a tandem which is a great way to spend time together.
“I know first-hand just how shocking a Parkinson’s diagnosis can be, and how people, including my dad, struggle with the condition day to day.
“That’s why I want to encourage as many people as possible to Pedal for Parkinson’s UK in Stratford-upon-Avon – it’s a great way to exercise, see the stunning countryside and raise vital funds at the same time.”
The entry fee is £20 for adults (£10 for 11-15 year olds). There is no minimum sponsorship required to take part, but the charity suggests cyclists aim to raise at least £100.
All cyclists will receive an exclusive Pedal for Parkinson’s finisher’s medal.
