Cracked-up redway to be probed by Milton Keynes Council

Mysterious cracks appearing in a redway built less than a year ago are to be investigated by the council.

Gaps of an inch wide have appeared all over the surface of the stretch of redway on the H9 Groveway.

Cyclists say the pathway, which runs near the Thurlow Nunn garage, is bad enough to pitch them off their bikes.

And they predict it will get even worse when frost and ice penetrate.

“The worst section is breaking up badly with gaps of an inch or so as deep as the substrate it sits on,” said one cyclist.

“The whole length of redway from the BP garage on the A421 right up to the turning point at Wavendon Gate is affected,” he said.

“If a bike hits one of the cracks it could easily pitch you off. It’s dangerous and something needs to be done.”

The cyclist reported the state of the 400 metre stretch of redway to MK Council.

He was told officers had carried out an inspection and concluded it “did not require immediate remedial work.”

Five days later the Citizen contacted the council on the cyclist’s behalf – and officers agreed to look into it.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of this concern and are carrying out an investigation.”
