AN author has released her debut novel – based entirely in Milton Keynes.

Joanne Phillips, who lived in the city for more than 20 years, tells the story of a single mother who loses everything she owns in a house fire in ‘Can’t Live Without’.

The novel celebrates the clean, vibrant atmosphere of MK, with key locations such as Willen Lake taking centre stage.

Joanne said: “I started this novel before the recession hit, but it seems even more poignant now. The main character, Stella, has to figure out just what it is she really can’t live without – how many of us have also had to reassess our priorities lately?”

The book is available in ebook format from Amazon, and will also be published in paperback next month.

In the spirit of epublishing, Joanne, who now lives in Shropshire, even held a ‘virtual’ book launch.

“We had an online party, on my blog, Facebook and Twitter. I was amazed at how much fun it was – and no clearing up to do afterwards,” she said.

She added: “Too often Milton Keynes is portrayed as very one-dimensional, nothing more than dual-carriageways and concrete cows. In many ways, Can’t Live Without could be set anywhere, but Milton Keynes reflects the theme of starting all over again perfectly.

“All the main characters live here and their love for the city shines through.”

A sequel is planned for later this year.
