A WOMAN who was once a 17 stone, bearded man has been welcomed with open arms into the sisterhood of the Midnight Moo walk.

Six footer Delia Johnston will take the bull by the horns by donning pink shorts and stepping out alongside over 1,700 women on Saturday night.

All of them will be helping to raise much-needed funds for Willen Hospice.

This week the 55-year-old has spoken of the “honour” of taking part in this traditional ladies only event.

Delia said: “When I rang the hospice and said I was a pre-op transgender woman wanting to do the Midnight Moo, I wasn’t sure what sort of response I was going to get but there was no problem at all.”

Delia, born as David, struggled for decades feeling abnormal as a male. The feelings only grew as she married, fathered two children and became a highly successful businessman.

Eighteen months ago David finally plucked up courage to become Delia, admitting her 6ft 1in tall frame was a ‘work in progress’.

Now, after hormone treatment, style advice, voice therapy and countless beauty sessions, Delia has become an ambassador for the transgender and transsexual population.

She runs her own advice service called Delia’s Trans Advisory, counsels other patients and even advises prison bosses on how to handle transsexual inmates.

“I’m due to have the full sex change op next year and have never been happier,” she says. “At last I feel like the real me.”

With her new female intuition, Delia now realises she had often been ‘selfish’ as skilled technical advisor David.

“As a businessman I spent my time manipulating people and taking from them. Now the new me wants to put back into society all I have taken in the past.

“I want to start by raising money for Willen Hospice. It is an excellent cause and I’m honoured to take part in the Midnight Moo.

“It will be great fun,” said Delia. “The only problem I’m envisaging is that the other women might be jealous of my extra long legs!”

> There is still time for last minute registration on and ladies can also register on the night at the Midsummer Place shopping centre starting point.
