BARBARIC fights where dogs battle to the death could be happening in or around the quiet town of Newport Pagnell.
The RSPCA has launched an investigation after the body of a dog believed to be an illegal pit bull terrier was found dumped at the side of the road.
Wrapped in a blood-covered duvet, on the Sherington Road, the body was covered in wounds consistent with a serious fight.
RSPCA inspector Sue Haywood said: “The dog also had old scars to his body, which leads us to believe that it had been involved in other fights prior to his death.”
She said the dog would have suffered an “agonising” amount of pain.
The RSPCA is urging anyone who recognises the pit bull to contact them in confidence on 0300 123 4999.
Brindle in colour with a white muzzle, chest and neck, the dog was wearing a black collar with silver studs.
If traced, the owners could face prison and a £5,000 fine.
