An Xscape security officer is under investigation for allegedly seizing a homeless man’s blanket and mocking him with it.

Social media users were in uproar after an eyewitness posted an account of the incident on Facebook last week.

She described how a security officer took the man’s blanket on the chilly evening and ran around with it, laughing.

“The homeless man was literally running after him and crying and begging him to give it back. The only reason he did give it back was because we were going mental at him... I don’t understand how anyone could treat another human being like that.”

The post went viral, prompting furious responses from everybody who shared and read it.

The woman, who was visiting Xscape with her friend, reported the incident to management.

Xscape posted on Facebook: “We are aware that this happened. We are investigating it. Rest assured that a complete investigation will be completed an appropriate action taken.

“Resolving the current homelessness issue in MK is high on our agenda.”

An Xscape spokesman told the Citizen the matter was being investigated internally and also by city police and the national Security Industry Association. He said CCTV evidence will be scrutinised.

“Resolving the current homelessness issue in MK is high on our agenda. Earlier this year we partnered with the YMCA and are in discussion with the homeless shelter in a bid to help.”
